Who We Are

About Casa Sulis

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Sololá, Guatemala, Casa Sulis Animal Society was born, and fueled by a heartfelt vision to transform the lives of stray dogs and cats and with the hopeful aspiration of establishing the town’s very first veterinary clinic.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Atitlan, our village is a tapestry of culture and tradition, home to the Kaqchikel indigenous Mayan community. Despite its beauty, many of our four-legged friends find themselves without a home, wandering in search of shelter and a kind hand.

Since launching on October 27, 2023, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Casa Sulis has evolved into a haven, providing shelter for homeless dogs, facilitating adoptions, and promoting a healthier future with spay/neuter programs and educational efforts. Despite the steep challenges faced by a new nonprofit, our community came together, achieving the remarkable goal of sterilizing 100 dogs and 9 cats in just a few short months.

Our mission is clear: to curb the tide of unwanted dogs and cats by empowering the community and providing essential sterilization and veterinary services to those most in need. We dream of a Santa Cruz La Laguna where each animal is cherished, and every wagging tail speaks of love and compassion.

We’re building a future where every animal feels the warmth of a loving home, supported by a community that values the bond between humans and pets. But we cannot do it alone. Your hands can heal, your voice can advocate, and your support can ignite the change we wish to see.

Our Mission & Values

Our vision is simple yet profound — a community where every animal is cherished and nurtured.
We are guided by four core values:

Compassion for Everyone

We strive to create an environment where every animal is treated with the kindness and love they deserve.

Education and Awareness

Empowering our community with knowledge to foster responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Sustainable Solutions

Committing to long-term strategies such as sterilization to reduce the number of homeless animals.

Community Engagement

We invite everyone, near and far, to join our cause, share our story, and spread a wave of love and care.

The Inspiration

The spark that ignited the flame of Casa Sulis was a dog named Lucky. Rescued from the streets, battling mange, and on the verge of motherhood, Lucky’s tale is one of transformation from despair to hope. Her arrival into our lives, followed by the birth of five puppies, shed light on the grim realities faced by countless dogs. Inspired by Lucky’s resilience and the sheer joy she brought into our lives, we accelerated our plans to start Casa Sulis a year early, aiming to offer the same chance at happiness to every animal we meet or to at least control the birth of unwanted dogs and cats.

Behind The Name

Casa Sulis, meaning ‘home of healing waters,’ takes its name from Sulis, the Celtic Goddess known for her therapeutic waters.

Our name embodies our core mission – to provide a range of services aimed at helping the wounded, lost, and forgotten animals find comfort, healing, and a fresh start. The blue hues in our logo and the fluidity of its design are inspired by the tranquil waters of Lake Atitlan, a constant reminder of our commitment to healing and renewal.
